Labradorite Jewelry

Associated with winter and the Northern Lights, Labradorite is legendary for its otherworldly beauty. It was known in earlier centuries to Inuit tribes, who described the mineral as frozen fire from the Aurora Borealis. After its official discovery in 1770 in Labrador, Canada, it became a popular gem in Europe.

Available in an array of cold-spectrum colors that range from black to white, from dark to light gray, and from gray-green to bluish-gray, the inner heart of the Labradorite gemstone glows with iridescent hues of deepest blue, peacock blue, pale blue, blue-green, gold, or coppery-red. These spectacular flashes of brilliant color, known as "labradorescence," are caused by tiny fractures inside the mineral that reflect light back and forth before dispersing it in a dazzling array of colors. Rarer varieties of this famous stone from the Plagioclase Feldspar group include Golden Labradorite, which is transparent gold or champagne in color, and Spectrolite, which displays an intense range of color from the entire spectrum. Spectrolite contains the strongest concentrations of labradorescence, and it was only recently discovered in the 1940s in Finland.
